Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance | Unsettling the Lens Film Series

It’s been 35 years since the Kanehsatake Resistance, also known as the Oka Crisis, began on July 11th 1990, and to commemorate this important event in history, we will be hosting a two-part film screening of 'Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance', and 'Rocks at Whiskey Trench', both by Alanis Obomsawin.

Free Admission – Donations welcomed.
Popcorn and drinks are available for purchase. All proceeds go directly to Indigenous Programming at Nanaimo Art Gallery.

These films kick off our monthly Indigenous Film Screening Series, Unsettling the Lens, curated by Indigenous Engagement Coordinator bailey macabre and in partnership with the National Film Board of Canada. This series puts Indigenous stories front and center—told by Indigenous filmmakers themselves. From eye-opening documentaries that reframe history to bold, genre-spanning films, Unsettling the Lens celebrates the power, creativity, and diversity of Indigenous cinema.
